Backpack Program

The Details 

The Open Door feeds 113 children every week through their Backpack Program. We currently partner with three area schools: Abe Wing, Sandford Street, and BOCES. If your child attends one of these schools and needs assistance, please contact your school office.

This is truly a collaborative effort. School administration decides who is eligible, the Open Door provides the food, Open Door volunteers pack it, and PTA members pick it up and pack it in bags for students.  We could not provide this level of care if it weren’t for generous people in our community like you!

Each student receives enough food for 4-6 meals and more on long weekends.  We provide lunch entrees, breakfast items, healthy snacks, fruit, treats, juice, and Stewart’s half-gallon milk cards. Food comes from many places as well: Gleaned foods from local grocery stores, individual donations of food and money, Regional Food Bank, corporate donations, grants, etc.
